Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island, is the reference in the world of freeride skiing, with cumulative snowfall of around 20 metres. Whether using the ski lifts or hiking, we will ski on the most beautiful snow.
Japan is a country of tradition, but also an ideal destination for a powder skiing holiday!
For this safari, we have chosen the island of Hokkaido, the northernmost island in the country.
Nicknamed the ‘last frontier’, it is a place where the most beautiful landscapes meet and collide. The northern island has more than 60 ski resorts...
The quality of the snow is exceptional, as these are said to be the snowiest resorts in the world, with 10 to 15 metres of snow per winter and a humidity level of less than 5%!
Skiing on volcanoes, hot springs, world-renowned and appreciated cuisine, impeccable hospitality: Japan is well worth a visit... The itinerary for this travelling safari will allow you to discover two very distinct regions of the island:
- Furano in the centre of the island is the ideal base from which to explore several different resorts, all less than an hour's travel from each other.
- Niseko is located in the west of the island. It is the largest ski resort in Hokkaido with a vertical drop of 1,000 metres. The village of Kutchan, which is 250 metres above sea level and right next to Niseko, holds several world records for snowfall, with a peak of 21 metres of snow. It is also an ideal base for visiting other resorts in the area.

Equipment
COMMUNAL EQUIPMENT
SAFETY EQUIPMENT
Avalanche transceiver, shovel, probe.
EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT
Each guide carries all the equipment necessary for the safety of their group (emergency radio, first aid kit, tool kit, survival blanket, rope, shovel, probe, etc.) in their rucksack. If you have your own equipment, please bring it with you.
INDIVIDUAL EQUIPMENT
Ski equipment can be hired on site to avoid transporting it by plane. Please let us know if you wish to do so.
SKI TOURING: Guides use and recommend 100mm freeride touring skis because they allow you to ski with ease on the slopes and save your legs in deep snow. Equipped with DYNAFIT LOW TECH touring bindings, they are light enough for climbing with skins and guarantee access to virgin slopes even after several days of good weather.
LUGGAGE: (Please travel light!) As you will have two different stages during the safari, it is best to have practical luggage that is quick to pack and easy to carry.
Bring only one piece of luggage (suitcase or travel bag) per person (no small packages that may get lost).
A SMALL BACKPACK (32L) for your daily essentials, including:
- Orange screen mask for bad weather and iridium for the sun.
- Scarf or neck warmer to protect against wind, cold, powder snow and sun.
- High protection sun cream for the face and lips.
- Pocket knife for picnics.
- Aluminium survival blanket.
- Spare gloves if you fall often!
- Mittens if you are sensitive to the cold.
- Drinks, dried fruit, chocolate, energy bars, etc.
- Shovel and probe: If you have them, bring them along.
CLOTHING :
You will spend much more time in your ski gear than in your après-ski gear. At any time of the season, the weather can be fine and mild, or it can be extremely cold, snowy or rainy. If you are properly equipped, you will enjoy skiing whatever the weather. We ski in all weather conditions. Bring clothing suitable for all weather conditions: in snowstorms, skiing in the forest is fantastic. Bring an extra layer of clothing in your rucksack for the day so that you can adapt to any changes in temperature.
